Unbelievable Things That Emerged in This World From Sea As Per the Legend of Samundramanthan.

Samudra manthan is one of the most intriguing episodes of Hindu mythology. This was an event arranged by Lord Indra to find the kingdom of heaven and obtain the elixir of life (amrit) that was submerged in the great ocean. For this, the help of demons was crucial, as they had captured the sea.

To begin with, Gods and demons used the sea serpent Vasuki and Mandrachal Mountain for churning the ocean. Lord Vishnu took a form of tortoise and bore the mountain on his back to keep it from sinking. This incident actually refers to our life where this world is the sea and Mandrachal is like our heart, which needs Gods support to be strong and stable. Vasuki signifies mind, which is the main tool to churn the ocean (world) and attain desirable objects. Controlling the motion of the serpent thus denotes self-control.

Mostly, people are only aware of two main things that came out of the ocean- the elixir of life (amrit) and poison (vish or halahal) which Lord Shiva consumed to save the creation.

Lord Vishnu took his second avatar as Kurma.

‘Airavat’ the multi-tusked elephant: A 4-toothed giant elephant came out from the sea along with 64 other white elephants. He was received by Lord Indra.

‘Uchhay Shravah’ the white horse: A shining white colour, stong horse emerged from the sea. This went to demons and Daityaraj Bali took it.

‘Rambha’ the apsara:Several beautiful celestial beauties came out of the sea, out of which, the most beautiful one chose to go to heaven.

Kamadhenu’ , a cow which provides desired objects:It provided essential ingredients like milk, curd, ghee for holy purposes like havan or yagyas.

Goddess Laxmi: The goddess of wealth put a garland on Lord Vishnu and went with him.

Kalpavriksha, the wish-fulfilling tree : The gods planted it in heaven.

Varuni devi: She signified liquor and the demons took her happily.

‘Parijat’ the wonder tree:It had a special quality. Merely touching this tree removed all the fatigue from the body. It was planted in paradise.

Kaustubh jewel: The most attractive of all gems, was given to Lord Vishnu, who adorned it on his breast plate.

Sankha, the conch: It was taken by Lord Vishnu. It is a symbol of victory.

Dhanvantari, the physician for all Gods:He emerged from the sea with a golden chalice of ‘Amrit’ (the elixir that makes one immortal). He is the deity who is also worshipped on Dhanteras.
