Dattatreya Jayanti


Dattatreya Jayanthi also known as Datta Jayanthi is birthday of lord Dattatreya.It is celebrated on the full moon day of Margashirsha (November-December) all over the country, and specially in Maharashtra. Dattatreya is considered as Trimurti Avatar, an united incarnation of Hindu Trinity. (Lord Vishnu, Brahma and Maheshwara.).Dattatreya was born as the son of Atri Maharshi and Anasuya.Dattatreya acquired knowledge from 24 objects which included the earth, water, fire, sky, moon, sun, pigeon, python, ocean, moth, honey-bee, elephant, deer, etc., and treated them as his preceptors and gurus.




On Dattatreya Jayanti people get up early in the morning and have ablutions in sacred streams, rivers, etc., observe fast and spend the day in meditation, prayer and worship. They meditate on the life of Dattatreya and read his works which include Avadhuta Gita and Jivanmukta Gita. The image of Dattatreya is worshipped with flowers, lamps, incense, camphor, etc., and the aspirants take resolve to follow the path of Swami Dattatreya.   People also observe dattatreya Vratham on this day.

Datta Jayanti is celebrated with much fanfare in the god's temples. The temples dedicated to Dattatreya are located throughout India, the most important places of his worship are in Maharashtra and Gujarat like Gangapur near Solapur, Narasimha Wadi in the Kolhapur district, Audumbar in Sangli district and Girnar in Saurashtra. Some temples host an annual 7-day festival in honour of the deity in this period.
