Subrahmanya sasthi


Lord Subramanya is also known as Kumara, Shanmukha, Kartikeya and Shanmatura. Lord always looks like a small boy so he is called Kumara. Shanmukha he is called as he has six faces. The Lord was   brought up by six sisters named Kruttika so he is called Kartikeya.

As the lord was brought up by six mothers he is called Shanmatura. It is on this day Sri Subramanya was born. He was born on Margashira Panchami day and killed Tarakasura. The Lord is also named as Skanda as he is the avatar of Manmatha. He is the lord of war and is in the same Kakshya of Indra.

On Subramanya Shasti the person performs the pooja of Lord Subramanya. The Lord is worshipped in the form of five-hooded snake. Lord Subramanya is a Brahmachari and so the Lord likes them as they are free from dwesha-asuya and their heart is pure. In some houses where Subramanya Shasti is observed, people take early bath and go to the temple. They offer their prayers to the Lord. Brahmachari is called for feast on this day. The feast includes dish made out of Urad dal. They are given Vastra (cloth) and dakshina (money). In Karnataka, in Kukke Subramanya temple, Subramanya Shasti is observed with extreme excitement and devotion.
