Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain


Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingams, which are supposed to be the most sacred abodes of Shiva. Hariyali Teej





Hariyali Teej is observed on the Tritiya (3rd day) of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight of the moon) in the month of ‘Shravan’ as per the Hindu calendar .  Shravan month marks the beginning of monsoon i.e. the rainy season in India.  The word “Hariyali” means “greenery” that is a symbol of growth and prosperity. Thus, Hariyali teej is the celebration on this greenery and growth.

Andal Jayanthi





Aadi Pooram, also called as ‘Aandal Jayanti’ is a prime festival of Tamilians. This festival is dedicated to Goddess Andal, an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Aadi Pooram is celebrated during the month of ‘Aadi’ in Tamil calendar that corresponds to the months of July-August in the English calendar.

Mata Chintpurni Mela 2016

Mata Chintpurni Mela is a famous event held Chintpurni Mata Temple in Himachal Pradesh. It is also popular as Shravan Navaratris festival (Sawan Navratri).


The Chintpurni fair also called ‘Mata Da Mela’  is held in Maata ka darbar in village Chintpurni, the fair is held in Navratris and in Sawan Months during the first ten days of shukla paksha i.e. the bright half of the lunar month. The fair lasts for nine days during the navratris and for ten days in Sawan.

Hariyali Amavasya

Hariyali Amavasya is an important Hindu observance celebrated on the ‘amavasya’ (no moon day) during the ‘Krishna Paksha’ (the waning phase of moon) in the ‘Shravana’ month of the traditional Hindu calendar. Also referred as the ‘Festival of Greenery’, it marks the onset of the monsoon season. Hariyali Amavasya is the first Amavasya of the Shravana month and this date falls during the months of July-August in the Gregorian calendar. Like other Amavasya, it holds strong religious values for the people of Hindu community. Hariyali Amavasya is celebrated with great fervour as the festival of rainy season and in this day people come out and enjoy the seamless beauty of Nature. On this day, Lord Shiva is worshipped with full devotion.

Aadi Perukku

Aadi Perullu also known as ‘Aadi 18’ is an auspicious festival of the Hindus belonging to the Tamil community. This festival is observed on the 18th day during the Tamil month of ‘Adi’ that corresponds to the months of mid-July-mid-August, as per the Gregorian calendar. Aadi Perukku honours the life-sustaining properties of water, one of the Nature’s gifts to mankind. On this day Mother Nature is worshipped in the form of Amman deities. It is more like a thanksgiving ceremony for Nature’s bountiful grace on mankind.

Bhaumvati Amavasya

Bhaumvati Amavasya is referred as an occurrence of ‘Amavasya’ on a Tuesday. According to the Hindu scriptures, Amavasya refers to dark moon lunar phase that occurs every month in the Hindu calendar. Amavasya that falls on a Tuesday is therefore known as Bhaumvati Amavasya. This day is considered to be very auspicious for performing ancestral tires like ‘pitru daan’ and ‘pitru tarpan’. Hindu devotees worship their ancestors on this day to seek their blessings for prosperity and peace in life. Bhaumvati Amavasya is also called as ‘Bhaumya Amavasya’ or ‘Bhomvati Amavasya’.

Sravan Shivaratri

Masik Shivaratri  observed in the  month of Sravan is known as the Sravan Shivaratri.Devotees observe strict fast on this day. They perform Shiv pooja and visit Lord Shiva temples.All lord Shiva temples decorated beautifully and observe this festival in a grand manner.

Sawan Shivaratri is observed in a grand manner in Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar. In amavasyant calenders it is observed in Ashadam month.

Kamika Ekadashi

This Ekadashi is observed during the waning phase of the moon (Krishna Paksha) in the Shravan month in the traditional North Indian Hindu calendar, Kamika Ekadashi falls in the month of July or August. However, in the Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada and Telugu calendar, Kamika Ekadashi falls in the Ashada month. This vrat is considered highly significant and auspicious for performing good deeds and seeking blessings of the Lord. Holy baths take place in sacred rivers, such as Ganga, Yamuna, Sindhu, Cauvery, Godavari, Krishna, and so on.

Shravan month 2016

Shravan is the fifth month from traditional Hindu calendar. This month begins in late July and ends in the third week of August. Shravan month is also known as Avni in Tamil. With the beginning of the Shravan month, Sun enters in Leo.This month is considered as the holiest month of the year as it comes with religious festivals and ceremonies. Guru Purnima 2017

The day of full moon, Purnima, in the month of Ashadh is traditionally celebrated as Guru Purnima by Hindus.The word Guru is derived from two words, 'Gu' and 'Ru' . The Sanskrit root "Gu" means darkness or ignorance. "Ru" denotes the remover of that darkness.This day is celebrated in the sacred memory of the great sage Vyasa, the ancient saint who compiled the four Vedas, wrote 18 Puranas, the Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavata.




Jaya Parvati Vrat

Jayaparvati Vrat is observed in Ashada Maas by unmarried girls and married women in Gujarat and some other Western India parts.This vrat is dedicated to  Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.The Vrat begins on the 13th day in the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the Hindu month of Ashada.The Main Purpose of observing this vrat for happy family,peaceful life ahead.

Karka Sankranti

Sankranti means the Sun’s entry in a Sign.On this day the sun enters Karka Rashi (Cancer). It is also known as Dakshinayanam which marks the end of the Uttarayan Punya kaal (daytime for gods) and the begining of Dakshinayana punya kaal (nightime for gods.) In Hinduism it is believed that the gods go to sleep during the period of Dakshinayanam. During Karka Sankranti performing pitru tarpan or the rituals which pay respect to our pitrus or ancestors is considered highly meritorious. Worshipping Lord Vishnu, chanting the Vishnu Sahasranam and worshipping Varaha (the third incarnation of Vishnu) is a must on Karka Sankranti.

Vasudeva Dwadashi

Vasudeva Dwadashi is a vrat dedicated to Lord Vishnu or Lord Krishna.It falls on the day after Devshayani Ekadashi.

As part of Chaturmas Vrat devotees under go Strict strict penance for the four months of Ashada, Shravan, Bhadrapada and Ashvin can gain tremendous benefits and salvation of the soul. Donating rice, fruits and clothes to Brahmin priests is considered auspicious on this day.

Devshayani Ekadasi

The waxing phase of the moon (Shukla Paksha) of Ashada month is celebrated as Devshayani Ekadashi or Ashadi Ekadashi. The date of this ritual corresponds to the month of June or July.  In Maharashtra, the famous Pandarpur Yatra concludes on this day. The major celebrations take place in Lord Vithal Temple in Pandarpur.The Chatur Maas vrat begins from this day, as it is believed that Lord Vishnu went into a deep sleep for the next four months beginning from this day.

The temple management is set ready to conduct Sri Chennakesava Swamy and Sri Siddheswara Swamy brahmotsavams in Tallapaka village of Kadapa district in July.

Pandharpur Yatra - 2016

The annual Pandharpur Yatra at the  famous Vithoba Temple at Pandharpur in Maharashtra attracts thousands of people.This yatra takes place every year on the 11th day of the bright moon in the month of Ashada.

There is no definite information available on the origin of Wari tradition but it has been taking place for more than 700 years.

Gauri Parvati Vrat





Gauri Parvati Vrata is observed by unmarried women and young girls. This Vratha is observed in ashada masam.It is observed for five days. The vrat starts on  Ekadashi day in the month of Ashada in the waxing phase of the moon and the fast ends on the day of Purnima. A partial fast is observed wherein the girls perform pujas for Goddess Parvati.

Kumar Sashti

Kumar Sashti also known as ‘Skanda Sashti’ is an important Hindu festival that is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, who is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Kartikeya is worshipped by different names like ‘Kumar’, ‘Muruga’, ‘Subramanya’ and therefore the name ‘Kumar Sashti’. Kumar Sashti is observed on the ‘sashti’ (6th day) during the Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight of moon) in the month of ‘Ashadh’ in the Hindu calendar. As per the Hindu legends it is believed that on this auspicious day, Lord Kartikeya appeared on Earth to defeat the demon named, ‘Adharma’.
