Ayyappa Deeksha - Rituals




Ayyappa Deeksha is the ritual undertaken by Devotees of Lord Ayyappa Swamy during Karthik masam.The deeksha begins on mandal puja and ends on Makar sankranti day.Many devotees under take this deeksha for 41 days.


 The  person who has visited Sabarimala for more than 18 years is allowed to initiate another person into the deeksha.The person who visited Sabarimala for 18 years is called Guru Swamy. Usually the deeksha is taken at the temple.The person who takes this deeksha are called Swamis.

  • They have to wear Black colour dress.
  • They will visit temple every day(any Temple).
  • Avoid using footwear.
  • Avoid Non-Vegeterian food.
  • Many Devotees will Sleep in temples at night.
  • Take bath in cold water in early morning.
  • Always Chant Mantras.
  • They have to Sleep in the floor.
  • Celibacy must be followed Strictly.

The deeksha is removed only after visiting the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple in Kerala and there after the devotee can resume normal life.
