Pausha Putrada Ekadashi

Ekadashi that is observed on Shukla Paksha of the Paush month is known as Paush Putrada Ekadashi. People without children believed that by observing the Putrada Ekadashi vrat on this day they would be blessed with a child.Couples also worship the deity for well-being for their children.Grains, beans, cereals, and certain vegetables and spices are avoided on this day. This Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is more popular in North India, while other states give more importance to the Shravana one.

Devotees take early morning bath on this day, pray lord vishnu and observe fast. This ekadasi is mentiond in bavishyottara purana by Lord Krishna.

Hanuman Temple - Karmanghat

Karmanghat Hanuman Temple is located at Karmanghat, closer to Sagar Ring Road, it is a temple of Lord Hanuman. It is one of the oldest and most famous temples in the city.

This temple was built in 11th century A.D (approximately 1143).The temple is now spread over 3 acres. It also has a one-acre pond.

Margashira Shukla Paksha Saptami is observed as Mitra Saptami. Mitra means Surya Bhagavan (Sun God).This festival is dedicated to Sun God.On this day people visit temples, perform special pujas to the surya Bhagavan and Navgrahas. Naivedyam is offered to the god. Observing Mitra Saptami vrat provide health and wealth to the devotees.

Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is dedicated to the sun god and observed for four days during the hindu lunar month of Kartik. Chhath Puja, also known as Surya Shashti,It Is performed to offer thanks to the Sun God, Surya.


The puja is performed  on Kartik Shukla Shashti i.e. 6th day of the month of Kartik, This falls typically in the month of October or November.Chhath Puja is the only festival in the world where devotees offer salutations to the setting and rising sun to celebrate the significance of the cycle of birth, which starts with death.

Akshay Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya, which falls on the third day of the bright half of the pan Indian lunar month of Vaishakha of the traditional Hindu calendar, is one of the most important days of the year for the Hindus.

 Also known as Akha Teej or Navanna Parvam, it's in the month of late April or early May .It is an auspicious day of the birthday of Lord Parasurama who is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On this day Veda Vyas and Lord Ganesha began to write Mahabharata.

The word "Akshaya" means the never diminishing in Sanskrit and the day is believed to bring good luck and success. It is believed that if you do charity on this day you will be blessed.on this day that people conduct special Pujas, bathe in holy rivers, make charity, and offer barley to the burning fire.There's also a tradition to sprinkle Tulsi water onto the idols of Gods while performing the aarti.. Various Hindu deities like Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva and Devi Laxmi are worshipped on the day for different reasons. Lord Ganesha is worshipped before setting sails for any new venture or deed, Lord Krishna is worshipped for Salvation, Lord Shiva is worshipped for health and good luck, and Goddess Laxmi is worshipped for wealth.

Legends :

On the same day as Akshaya Tritiya, Parashurama Jayanti is also observed in several parts of the country, as legend has it that it was on this day that Lord Parashurama was born.Lord Ganesha started writing the great epic Mahabharata. Even in the epic, Lord Krishna presented the Pandavas, during their exile, with an Akshaya Patra, a bowl that never went empty and provided with an unlimited supply of food on demand.It is believed, it was on this day that the Goddess of food known as Annapurna, a special avatar of Goddess Parvati, who feeds the hungry, was born.As per the Hindu mythology, Kubera, known to be a banker in heaven, received all his wealth on the day of Akshaya Tritiya by worshipping the Lord Shiva in the temple at Sivapuram. It was on the day of Akshaya Tritiya that the sacred river Ganges descended from heaven onto the earth.It is on this day that poor 
Sudama, the best friend of Krishna visits Him (Lord Krishna) to greet Him after He became the King. With nothing to offer, Sudama takes with him Poha (puffed rice) and offers it to his friend and never discusses his poverty though he intends to. On his return he finds his hut changed to a palace.

Rituals :

Gaja pooja is referred to as "Gaja Dhanaakarshana pooja".Gaja stands for elephant, Dhan stands for wealth and prosperity, aakarshan stands for attraction and pooja stands for worship. This means Gaja pooja aims at worshipping the elephant to attract and sustain wealth and prosperity in one's life and in society.Various mantras and chants are uttered by Vedic priests while the idol of an elephant is offered light, incense, flowers and food.

Gomatha Pooja :

Kind, calm, love and feeling of ever giving are the characteristics of a cow (Gomatha). To attain these qualities in one's life and in family, Gomatha Pooja is celebrated. While conducting this ritual, the cow and her calf/calves are cleaned, dressed and decorated first and then the pooja is offered in an appropriate way.

SundarMahalakshmi Grand 9 Priest Homa :

This ritual is of utmost importance and is celebrated with grandeur to praise goddess Maa Sundara Mahalakshmi who, in her form, exhibits all 64 incarnations of the Goddess. It is conducted by nine priests who chant 1008 names of Goddess Lakshmi. This grand ritual takes place in two phases; the first phase begins at 7:30 AM and lasts till 1:30 PM and the second phase begins at 4:30 PM and ends at 8:30 PM.

Celebrations :

In Northern India, the day is majorly celebrated as the birthday of Sage Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On this auspicious day, people make many kinds of charities which include Jala Daanama, Vastra Daanama, Shayana Daanama, Chandana Daanama, Padaraksha, Chatra Daanama, Naarikela Daanama, Udakumbha Daanama, etc. They take dips in the holy river Ganges in order to wash off their sins. It is also a day to begin Yatras as it is believed that anything starting on Akshaya Tritiya definitely bears fruit and brings success; many Yatras to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Char Dhaam and other pilgrims starts on this day. The day is also considered auspicious for marriages and you will see many people tying knots on this day. As far as in South india the day is celebrated with full enthusiasm considering Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi Kubera as the primary gods. On this day, Maha Vishnu Pooja and Lakshmi Kubera Homa are held, and charity in terms of offering food and clothing to poor and needy also go hand in hand. South Indians visit many temples like Tirupati Temple, Meenakshi Temple and Thousand Pillar Temple, etc. on this day for purity of their hearts and souls.

People of West Bengal start new audit books called Halkhata after worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha with the expectation of earning higher profits in their business. Many of them visit temples and also perform Satya Narayana Katha at their homes. Taking dips in sacred rivers is also a custom being practiced by Bengalis since ages.

The day is also considered significant in Orissa as the 42 days long Chandan Yatra begins on this day and chariot-making for famous Rath Yatra of Puri also commences on the same day. The tradition of making chariot for Puri Rath Yatra is well known as Rath Anukula.

Govardhan Puja

On the fourth day of Diwali, Govardhan Puja holds great significance among the Hindus in north India. In other parts of the country, this day is known as 'Padva' or 'Bali Pratipada',which is celebrated to welcome King Bali on earth.In this pooja, there is a tradition of building cow dung hillocks, which symbolize the Mount Govardhan, the mountain which was once lifted by Lord Krishna.

After making such hillocks people decorate them with flowers and then worship them. They move in a circle all round the cow dung hillocks and offer prayers to Lord Govardhan.

Margashira Poornima

The full moon day in the auspicious month of Margashirsha of the traditional Hindu calendar, is celebrated as ‘Margashirsha Purnima’. Hindu devotees worship the Moon God as it is believed that on this day, Moon was blessed with ‘Amrit’. Margashirsha Maas is the 9th month of the Hindu calendar and as per the Hindu scriptures this month is considered to be the month of dedication. In the Puranas, this month was referred as ‘Maasonam Margashirshoham’ implying that there is no month that is more propitious than Margashirsha. On this day devotees perform ritualistic bath in the sacred rivers and worship Lord Vishnu devotedly.

The flower garlands in Yamunathurai are brought by the periya Jiyar as per custom or his Ekangi in the temple with a lighted torch in a procession to the accompaniment of the beat of the Jeghanta.
                           The deity is then adorned with the flowers while the mantra pushpam is recited in the sayanamandapam.
ARCHANA
                    During the archana, also called Sahsranam Archana, the Lord is worshipped by reciting his one thousand sacred names.
KALYANOTSAVAM
                       Kalyanotsavam is also known as Vaivahikotsavam. It is conducted in the kalyanamandapa and its rituals are similar to those followed traditionally in Hindu marriages.The utsavamurthi of the Lord Malayappa Swamy is the bridegroom and His consorts (nachimars) viz. Sridevi and Bhudevi are the brides. An imaginary family pedigree of the brides and bridegroom is recited during the course of the ritual.The idols of the bridegroom and brides face each other with a screen in between. They are allowed to see each other only at the appropriate auspicious moment when the screen in removed. The priests’ peform homas. A purohit conducts the marriage and an archaka is consecrated to perform other rituals on the behalf of the bridegroom.
ARJITHA BRAHMOTSAVAM
                Brahmotsavam is performed for one day in an abridged manner Vaibhavotsava mandapam opp to Swamy Pushkarani. Sri Malayappaswami with his two consorts is worshipped with Vedic mantras and rituals and mounted on three vahanams-golden Pedda Seshavahanam,silver Garuda vahanam and silver Hanumantha vahanam.
DOLOTSAVAM(UNJAL SEVA)
                             Sri Malayappa swamy, Sridevi and Bhudevi are seated in an Unjal(swing) in the Aina Mahal(Mirror hall) and swung to the accompaniment of Vedaparayanam and Mangalavadyam.
SAHASRA DIPALANKARAN SEVA
                            This seva is performed in the unjal mandapam outside the Srivari temple. The beautifully decorated mandapam will be aglow with thousands of lamps. The Lord is seated on an Unjal which is rocked gently to the accompaniment of a clarinet orchestra.
VASANTHOTSAVAM
                        Vasathosavam is a festival of color. These periodical festival, celebrated in the spring season is performed in a abridged manner daily in vaibhavotsava mandapam .
EKANTHA SEVA
                      Ekantha seva or panupu seva darshanam is conducted when the Lord is put to sleep. Tarigonda Vengamabbas harathi (in a plate inlaid with one of the dasavasthrams on each day with pearls.) is offered.

WEEKLY SEVAS AT TIRUMALA

VISESHA SEVA
                         This seva was first introduced in Srivari temple on April 8 th 1991. This seva takes place on every Monday morning. Sri Malayyapa Swamy and his consorts are taken to Kalyana mandapam and worship is offered to them with homas and tirrumanjanam as per Vaikhanasa Agama.
ASTADALAPADA PADMARDHANA
                      The ritual is performed on very Tuesday after second archana. This seva, instituted in 1984 commemorating the golden jubilee celebrations of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam,features archana to the Lord with 108 golden lotus.
SAHASRA KALASABHISHEKAM
               Every Wednesday before Sarvadarshanam, sahasrakalasabishekam is performed for Bogha Srinivasa with water from 1008 small silver vessels.
  THIRUPPAVADA SEVA
                 This seva is performed to the Lord on very Thursday. This worship consists of cooking a large quantity of rice as pulihora and offering it to the Lord  along with the other sweet preparations such as payasam, laddu, gilebi ,thenthola , appam etc. The cooked food is arranged in a pyramidal trapezoid shaped with coconuts, flowers, sandal paste, kumkum etc and is offered to the Lord with appropriate mantras.
ABHISHEKAM
                  Abhisekam to the Lord is performed in the early morning every Friday. Camphor, saffron and milk are used for giving a sacred bath to the Lord.After chanting of the Vedic mantras and prabandam , abhishekam is performed to the gold image Sri lakshmi which hangs in a gold chain in a chest amidst  the chanting of Sri suktam.The lord is then dressed in a pithamabaram and adorned with valuable ornaments.
NIJAPADA DARSANAM
                        Every Friday after abhishekam devotees are allowed for nija pada darshanam. They can worship the Lords Holy feet without any frills during this darshan. The Lords feet will be decorated with ornaments on other occasions.

PERIODICAL SEVAS AT TIRUMALA

FLOAT FESTIVAL
                             This was instituted by saluva Narshima in the 16 th centuary. The festival is celebrated for 5 days. On the first day, Lord Krishna in the navaneeta nritya pose is worshipped.

On the second day Sri Rama is seated on the float and offered the worship. On third to fifth day malayyapa swamy along with Sridevi and Bhudevi is worshpped. The utsava deities are daily decorated and taken in position in the pushkarani on a beautifully decorated float.
VASANTHOTSAVAM
                 It is a 3 day festival conducted at Tirumala on tryodasi, chathurdasi and purnami in the month of chaitra. On all the days Sri malayappa swamy and his consorts are taken round in position and brought to the vaibovotsava mandapam, where abhishekam is performed. On the 3rd day Sri Rama with Sita, Lakshmana and Anjeneya and Sri Krishna with Rukimini are also  taken out in position and brought to the vaibotsava  mandapam.  
  PADMAVATHI PARINAYAM
                               This festival instituted in 1992, occurs on vaishaka sudda dasami. It is celebrated for 3 days .on the day evening Sri venkateswara and his consorts are taken out in position and brought to Narayan giri gardens were worship is offered to them.
2 nd day the position of the Lord will be on Aswa vahana. The parinaya utsvam is conducted on all the 3 days culminated with special poojas to the Lord and goddesses on Vaishaka Sudda Ekadasi amidst chanting of Veda mantras and vadya gosha. ABHIDHEYAKA ABHISHEKAM
                    The rituals, also called jyeshtabhisekam are performed in the month of jyeshta for 3 days. This is held in the kalyanamanadapam in a solemn manner.
                    The festival is meant for proper protection and preservation of the utsava idols through various pujas and mantras. On the first day the golden kavacha of the Lord is removed and abhishekam and snapana tiruamanjanam are perfomed .Later, the Lord is adorned with diamond kavacha. On the second day, he is adoned with pearl studded kavacha and taken out in procession. On the third day Malayappa swamy is decorated with golden kavacha after tirumanajanam.
PAVITROTSAVAM
                     This is essentially a purificatory ceremony,aimed at expiating the sins of omission and commission arising in the daily worship and other relions rited performed in the temple. This function is elaborately conducted in the month of August every year.
PUSHPA PALLIKI
                    This seva is performed on Anivara Asthanam day in the month of july every year. After the usual rituals associated with Anivari Asthanam, held on the first day of summer solstice (Dakshinayanapunyakalam) at the end of Ani month,Sri Malayappa Swamy along with Sridevi and Bhudevi is taken out in procession on a palanquin bedecked with flowers.
PUSPHA YAGAM
                    This ritual is performed in the month of Kartika. The function originally started in the 15th Centaury, was revived in 1980 by the Devasthanams. On this occasion, Sri Malayappa Swamy along with his consorts are brought to kalyanamandapam after 2 archanas and 2 nivedanas and the deities are offered Tirumanajanam. Later in the afternoon worship is offered to the Lord with different kinds of flowers. Later, pushparchana is done. It takes place 20 times. Afterwards , harati is offered.

KOIL ALWAR TIRUMANJANAM

                   Koil Alwar Tirumanjanam is a purificatory ceremony that takes place in the temple incluisnd sanctum sanctorum. It is performed four times a year-before Ugadi, Anivara Athanam, the annual Brahmotsavam and Vaikunta Ekadasi(on Tuesday only).
After the first bell the smaller idols and other articles including the Akhanda Dipams are shifted to the antechamber. The garbhagriha is then cleaned and a ground paste of Kumkum, camphor and sandalwood is applied on the walls and later its walls are wiped clean after a while with water. The water-proof covering is removed and laghu Tirumanjanam is given to the main deity and Bhoga Srinivasa. Food is then offered to the Lord during the second bell.
